Research on airtightness of wooden buildings published

For several years, the Timber Research Institute, together with experts from the CTU and ČZU, has been collecting and evaluating data from measurements of the airtightness of buildings. This unique statistical data set was compiled, analysed and published in the prestigious scientific journal Building and Environment, issue 194. The use of the Blower door diagnostic method, which the Timber Research Institute carries out in an accredited mode, has been shown to contribute significantly to improving the performance of timber buildings. Therefore, one of the indirect results of the research is the confirmation of the well-known truth that prevention (using scientific knowledge) is better than subsequent complex and costly repair.

This research was supported by the Grant Agency of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague (projects SGS19/143/OHK1/3T/11 and SGS20/153/OHK1/3T/11) and the Grant Agency of the Timber Research and Development Institute in Prague (project TIP/IGA/1/2019).

Certification of ADMD members more rigorously supervised by the Timber Research Institute

The certification process of ADMD (Association of Prefabricated House Contractors) members has long been carried out by the Timber Research Institute. This year, the quality requirements for some of the construction processes of houses according to the DNK document have been increased. Engineers at the Timber Research Institute have drafted modifications to the certification document and will continue to monitor compliance with the requirements for the manufacture and assembly of timber buildings.

Repairs of wooden icebreakers at the Charles Bridge in Prague

Charles Bridge in Prague is one of the main sights visited by thousands of Czech and foreign tourists every year. However, the structure dating back to 1357 is in a poor condition. The capital city is therefore planning a major reconstruction. Currently, it is starting to replace the wooden icebergs.

The Timber Research Institute is one of the partners involved in the reconstruction of this important Czech monument.

On the Vltava River at the Charles Bridge, the replacement of seven wooden icebreakers that protect the bridge piers during floods has begun. The Technical Administration of Communications (TSK) is also deepening the river bed at the site. While the dredging work will take a maximum of two months, the replacement of the icebreakers will probably take until the end of 2019. The Charles Bridge is the only bridge in Prague where icebreakers are used. The existing ones have been in use since 2004. According to an earlier statement by TSK, their condition has deteriorated rapidly in recent years and the new ones will be made of Czech oak wood.
